Coles controversial hot cross buns labelled 'monstrosity' by shoppers

A bizarre new twist on a classic Aussie Easter treat has Coles fans divided and baffled with some people going so far as to label it as a "monstrosity".

Australian food blogger Foodie Mumma Ren took her immensely popular Facebook page to share a snap of Coles' controversial Special Burger Sauce Hot Cross Buns, which have been doing the rounds on the internet.

"HERE THEY ARE! ❤️❤️❤️ Coles Burger Sauce Hot Cross Buns! Savoury Buns with Pickle Pieces. Would you give these a go?" the mum asked her followers.

The post quickly amassed hundreds of comments from shoppers divided over the bizarre flavour. For many, the savoury treat is a step too far:

"Yep….. that's a no for me," one commenter wrote.

"What in the sh-t… I just don't know about these," another confused commenter added.

"My 12 year old who will eat almost anything just gagged. Guess they are not for her," a third joked.

"That's disgusting."

Coles describes the Easter buns as "savoury buns with special burger sauce and pickle pieces" and also say they are "topped with indulgent tasty cheese".

However, not everyone under the post was disgusted by the savoury Easter treat.

"As someone who detests a normal hot cross bun I'd love these!" one person wrote.

"I just wish they'd bring back the jalapeno and cheese hot cross buns!" another eager commenter added.

The limited edition snack includes a picture of a bottle of the popular Coles' 'Special Burger Sauce' along with the words "made with our delicious Special Burger Sauce".

"Love the sauce, but however on hot cross buns…ew," a commenter concluded.

The new Coles Special Burger Sauce Hot Cross Buns are available in packs of four, in stores nationally.
