Jane de Graaff

Easter is the chocolate season. The one time of year where indulging in chocolate is not only encouraged, it's absolutely expected.

The supermarket shelves are lined with all the delectable offerings and there's rank on rank of eggs and bunnies to choose from — but there are some classics that return season after season and have a regular, loyal and longstanding fan base.

So, it's time to ask the ultimate Easter question. Of the classic Easter eggs and bunnnies, which are the winners, and which would we happily leave behind?

Gold Standard

It's no surprise to us at all that the classic Cadbury Creme Egg is up in this top tier. Every year fans go wild when the Easter range arrives, and no matter what, a classic Creme is always a fan favourite.

In fact, its only competition was the classic Lindt bunny and a plain, hollow milk chocolate egg. It seems we like the old-school (or creme-filled) best.

Fighting Chance

This tier was a little more varied and seemed to play to the child in all of us.

A Kinder egg has that childhood nostalgia of the toys and the creamy chocolate, while a Humpty Dumpty Smartie-filled egg is also a throwback. The magic of the tiny, solid milk chocolate egg that often makes up an Easter egg trail is also strong, filled with memories of counting out who had the most. But a Darrell Lea nougat-filled egg is an iconic treat, maybe the gold at the end of the egg hunt.

Take It or Leave It

Caramello eggs are great, but possibly not enough of a seasonal treat, given that caramel-filled chocolate is a year-round treat. So we'll take it or leave it for Easter.

The classic 100s & 1000s egg is like a giant freckle chocolate — fun, but not one we'd fight over. We were surprised the pretty little speckled eggs didn't rate higher; I mean, they look so Eastery in those classic pastel colours, but apparently looks aren't enough.

Yeah, Nah

In a second week of surprises in the ranking, we really can't understand how Caramilk is in the bottom ranking again.

Lovers of the caramel flavours are vocal and fanatic, so we thought this one would rate highe, but it seems there are more lovers of the old-school classics for Easter than the new kids on the block. Or maybe, just maybe, because Caramilk is still pretty fresh to the Easter scene, it will slowly become the king of Easter now that it's here.
