Woman shares speedy onion-chopping hack that'll stop you from crying
No matter how much you love to cook, I think we can all agree that the worst part of any recipe is definitely chopping onions.
Ok, maybe the worst part is doing the dishes afterwards. But chopping onions is undeniably a terrible task.
It's not easy to dice an onion into equally small cubes, especially if your eyes start stinging and you can't see through your tears.

That's why this onion-chopping video from a home cook in Sydney is so important. Jaycee Baso shared a video on TikTok of the method she uses to perfectly dice an onion in under one minute.
According to the video, you should slice one end off the onion, then chop it in half and remove the skin. Slice lengthways into one of the halves, but not all the way through. Hold onto each side of the half, and chop vertically.

Then rotate 90º and hold onto the knobbly bit where the roots are coming out. As you chop vertically again, you'll get uniform cubes of onion.
Repeat for the other half of the onion, then you're done!
And the best way to avoid tears while chopping? According to Baso, store your onions in the fridge before using them and your eyes won't sting at all.
The reason onions make us tear up is because of enzymes that are released as the vegetable is cut. These react with the air around them, making a gas that goes into your nose and eyes.

Just wearing goggles isn't enough to stop your eyes tearing up, as you'd also have to block your nose as well.
Next time you're chopping them up for a recipe, try keeping your onions in the fridge and see if it gives your eyes a much-needed break!
Baso shares a lot of cooking hacks and recipes on her TikTok channel. She's got a great tip to stop mashed potato getting cold, a recipe for a three-ingredient Kit Kat fudge, and more complex things like Thai Panang curry.
Now that we're all stuck inside for the foreseeable future, maybe it's time to level up our cooking skills. And at least now you won't be crying while chopping the onions.
