'How?': Woman's shock as bread price doubles at local grocer

With economic uncertainty looming, we are all beginning to feel the pinch of inflation – particularly in grocery stores. 

One TikToker was shocked to find the cost of bread at a local shop was double the price it normally would cost.

Chantel filmed herself doing her grocery shopping at Drakes, and showed a number of recognisable bread brands such as Wonder White and TipTop.

"Bread went from $3.60 to $6.20," the TikToker wrote in the caption.

Chantel then showed a TipTop loaf of bread retailing for $5.60 and then a loaf of Wonder White retailing for $6.20.

Independent grocers have generally always been slightly more pricey to shop at compared to chain supermarkets, however TikTok users were still blown away by the inflated price.

"No more toast kids! It's cheaper to give them Woolies mud cake for breakfast," one commenter joked.

"Same is happening in New Zealand. 18 eggs went from $9 to $18 in two days," another commenter said.

"How?" a third simply stated.

In a recent Reddit post, forum users also expressed their annoyance over the inflation of grocery prices at the moment. One user shared a post on Reddit's 'Australia' thread about how they picked up some essential and non-essential items including nappies, fruit and vegetables, tasty cheese, bacon, peanut butter, chicken nuggets and protein balls, the total cost coming to $170.

"I feel like that every time I go to the supermarket, even when I'm not planning on doing a big shop and just wanna pick up a few things, it's almost always $75+," one Reddit user said in the thread. "I'm a single guy buying for myself only.

"I don't know how families get by."

Inflation is not the only aggravating factor at work here. A year's worth of wild and unpredictable weather has been disastrous for crops, which has resulted in food shortages. Most recently, potatoes have been in dire supply, resulting in chain supermarkets bumping the price of potato chips up to $6.65.
