"Our expert panel taste tested over 20 products from traditional fruit and chocolate categories purchased from national supermarkets, Bakers Delight, and Costco," says CHOICE Editorial Director Marg Rafferty.

While there are a myriad of bizarre flavours hot cross buns come in these days, CHOICE stuck to the traditional fruit and chocolate hot cross buns for their survey.

The winner of the fruit hot cross bun taste test was the Woolworths Traditional Fruit Hot Cross Buns, which scored 75 per cent from CHOICE's expert panel.

Woolworths also clinched third place with their Luxurious Richly Fruited Hot Cross Buns, said to have a "pleasant fruitiness" to them.

If you have a food intolerance, allergy or gastrointestinal issue, it shouldn't mean you go without on Easter.

In recent years, supermarkets have widened their baked goods variety to cater different dietary needs. With this in mind, CHOICE rated a number of gluten-free options and  Coles' I'm Free From Gluten Wheat & Dairy Chocolate Hot Cross Buns was crowned the best gluten-free bun.

The Coles gluten-free buns are also dairy allergy friendly.
