'Cheeky' girl born 10 days early to become Sydney's first baby of 2021

The first baby to be born in Sydney in 2021 is a yet-to-be-named girl to parents Chandra Nandigama and Sai Sariga of Mays Hill.

The baby was born at the stroke of midnight at Westmead Hospital in Sydney's west at 12.05 am weighing 3000 grams.

The proud dad spoke of the timing of the birth of his child, telling 9News: "It's by luck, that's what we said, but it's the whole parcel."

Sariga said her due date was January 11 but she began experiencing labour pains on December 31.

Nandigama confirmed: "And then actually by the people/midwives talking it should be like 8.30 in the evening, but she acted a bit cheeky and she came out late... exactly at 12 and pushing pushing pushing and finally there."

He later said: "It's what we wanted for nine months... our precious bundle."

Sariga described her daughter as a "bundle of joy".

"We can't say more than that," she said.

Nandigama says the experience of welcoming his daughter has been overwhelming.

"It's hard to explain," he said. "It's happiness."

9Honey understands a baby was born at a similar time at Campbelltown Hospital.

The first baby born in America is another girl, Elena Jean Elizabeth Iglesias, the daughter of parents Marlena Iglesias and Eugene Ripple, born 7 seconds after midnight at the Guam Memorial Hospital.

PNC reports the baby has been given generous gifts from a local company as part of their "I Love Guam NEW YEAR BABY" campaign.
