How to get Zendaya’s bouncy curls

Harriet Armstrong

When it comes to pulling off a curly mane no-one does it quite like actress and singer Zendaya. The Spiderman star’s voluminous locks have become her signature 'do on the red carpet whether she’s rocking a Diana Ross-inspired afro or a big, bouncy updo.  But learning how to deal with her natural roots took some practice.  "I wasn't comfortable with my curls when I was a kid," Zendaya told Seventeen.

"I had to learn to appreciate and understand my hair."  Although we may not all be blessed with the Vogue covergirl’s naturally thick tresses, we can take a leaf out of her beauty book by giving ourselves a voluminous ‘do courtesy of the Disney star herself. Zendaya uploaded a step-by-step DIY hair tutorial to her official app last week and it’s surprisingly simple.  1. De-tangle

To start you'll need to make sure that your hair is wet and use a wide-toothed comb to brush "all the tangles and what not out," Zendaya says.

The actress shows how she runs a special styling product through her tangle-free hair to add volume and “define the curls or the waves...without making it crunchy," she explains.

Miss Jessie's MultiCultural Curls, $29 3. Wrap it up

Excessive heat styling can damage hair. To ease the pressure on roots Zendaya uses a super-absorbent microfibre towel designed to absorb excess moisture.

Zendaya uses a diffuser on her dryer to add body, even-out curl patterns and to allow hair to retain chemical bonds, which helps minimise frizz. The downside? You’ll be blasting away for a while.

"This is the longest part it takes forever!" Zendaya says. "Keep doing it until your hair is completely dry."

GHD Air Diffuser, $25 5.  The perfect frizz  After you are done drying your hair you should be left with big, bouncy curls that are red-carpet worthy.  "Here we have it! Big, popping curls." says the actress.
