How to: style Kurt Cobain's $140,000 worn cardigan

There's vintage shopping, and then there's spending a small mortgage on a cardigan once owned by Kurt Cobain.

"Auction house to the stars" Julien's Auctions have listed the green-grey cardigan Cobain wore for Nirvana's iconic 1993 MTV Unplugged performance, and while bidding is sitting at US $30,000 (approx. AU $42,000), the CEO of the Los Angeles-based auction house told the New York Post he, "could see it going for upward of $100,000 [AU $140,000]."

The cardigan is described as, "A blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket, size medium." Its perfectly worn-in state – rivalled only by its grunge-rock cred – is a vintage shopper's idea of nirvana (bad pun intended).

According to Julien's, the sweater was sourced from a close family friend of the Cobains, who will provide the highest bidder with a "signed letter of authenticity and provenance."

We've taken care of the styling (below), so if you've been looking to spend $140,000 on the perfect dead muso's cardigan but just haven't found The One, get your finances in order – bidding closes on November 7 (US time).
