The hair accessory our editors are obsessed with thanks to Hailey Bieber
If we’re living in a world according to Hailey Bieber, the ’90s are back with a vengeance.
The low-slung jeans we can leave in the past, thank you very much, but the latest hair trend is giving us flashbacks to our primary school days. People, the zigzag headband is back!

Why, you ask? Well, in March, Miu Miu founder Miuccia Prada sent a roster of models – including big names Gillian Anderson, Chloë Sevigny and Kristen McMenamy – down the Palais d’Iéna runway, with their generously gelled hair scraped back with the serrated band in question.
Its gradual revival has been years in the making – but now, it’s emerged to headline this year’s Y2K comeback in earnest.
Most recently seen woven through the silky tresses of none other than street style It-girl Hailey Bieber, the band first evolved from humble utility-wear in the ’80s, before accumulating some serious pop culture points in later years.
The humble band was even worn by the likes of Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and David Beckham at the height of its popularity – and it’s plain as day to see why.
The distinctive teeth-like comb design injects an instant element of visual interest to otherwise basic ensembles, elevating them to ’90s-chic status in a fraction of a second.

And the zigzag hasn’t just been embraced by women: gender-neutral takes on the classic have now been seen on our screens.
As the floppy Becks and Leonardo DiCaprio-issue cut returns to the forefront of men’s hair trends, so too does the zigzag band, with Love Island USA winner Bryce Alakai Dettloff triggering a wave of followers to slick back their tresses.
In fact, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Teddi Mellencamp was one of many inspired by Bryce, taking to Instagram to jump on the trend in turn.
“Been watching so much Love Island I’ve turned to Bryce for hair inspo,” she captioned the shots of her combed-back pixie.
Who would’ve thought that after seasons of aspirational polish on the runway, the chicest accessory of the year is one drawn straight from the depths of your childhood bedroom?
Big fan of the ’90s trends - zigzag headbands, peace signs, the lot! Karina Recchi
As for how it’s circulating in the office? Well, Lifestyle Editor Karina, whose hair is constantly being scraped back off her face after a regrettable decision to cut a fringe to look more like Kenzie Annis from Love Island USA, won’t leave home without one anymore.
“Anything that’s good enough for Hailey, is good enough for me,” she tells me.
