This is what it's really like to get your teeth whitened

In a world of quick-fix treatments and cult face serums, spending money on beauty is as normal, for some, as the weekly shop. 

But when it comes to cosmetic dentistry, many still view treatments as pricey and invasive; despite some weighing in at around the same price as a night cream. 

For years, I've wanted to get my teeth whitened. When rent and bills are gone, my hard-earned cash tends to go on clothes (far, far too many clothes) and socialising. So, I started to think, if I'm happy to spend on a jumper that I might not wear after next season, why wouldn't I splash that little bit more for the perfect smile?

Then I realised: it's because I'm scared. Teeth are precious. I work hard to keep mine healthy, and sure, they might not be perfectly straight and white, but the dentist tells me I'm doing okay every six months. Would I really want to jeopardise that?

Well, I'm nothing if not a gambler. When a close friend began raving about her recent teeth whitening experience, I decided it was time to bite the bullet (or mouthguard, as it happens) and try it for myself. She had hers done with Sparkling White Smile, and they looked great. A natural white, but definitely gleaming. 

I wanted some of that gleam for myself.

I got in touch with SWS; the company founded three years ago by then-21-year-old Alison Egan when she decided the cosmetic dental industry needed to be more accessible. Since launch, Sparkling White Smile has become a cult brand with an Instagram following many social influencers would be jealous of – think pictures of gorgeous girls smiling at the camera, cocktail in hand.  

The treatments vary slightly from company to company, but Sparkling White Smile use a simple gel and laser technique.

The highest-level use peroxide gels legally available for use in Australia (outside of dental surgeries), are applied to teeth before being activated with a laser accelerator lamp. The whole process takes around two hours. 

Does it hurt?

No, but you should be prepared to feel uncomfortable. However, it's worth noting that I do not have sensitive teeth.
A plastic mouthguard will keep your smile wide during the process, and allows the lamp to reach your teeth properly. 

On the plus side, being stuck in the same position for two hours will give you plenty of time to contemplate important things, or have a little nap.

How long will the teeth whitening effects last?

Three weeks after my first treatment, my teeth are still white. 

Customers are encouraged to have a follow-up session six weeks after the first treatment, after which 6-12 month top-ups are all you'll need to keep your smile bright.

Is there any aftercare involved?

For 48-72 hours after the treatment, you're encouraged to eat solely white food so as not to run the risk of staining teeth. After that, you can drink coffee to your heart's extent (although, of course, this is likely to stain eventually…)

SWS will give you an aftercare package, including temporary toothbrushes for the first two brushes after the treatment and a gel to apply twice a day.

Would I do it again?

Hell yes! I had to go without shopping for a month, but it was totally worth it.
