For obvious reasons, Cher's look at the 1974 Met Gala was dubbed "The Naked Dress".

It was created by Bob Mackie from souffle, a French fabric that was outlawed in the US at the time. The fabric was then sprayed down so it stuck to the singer's body.

The dress caused a stir, and when she later wore it on the cover of TIME magazine, the issue was banned in several US cities.

Before he was officially banned by Anna Wintour, Donald Trump was a regular at the Met Gala.

In 1985, the future President of the United States attended with his first wife, Ivana.

The Anna Wintour Met Gala reign began in 1989.

When Vreeland died that year, the Gala continued on without a chairperson.

Wintour attended, having been made Editor-in-chief of Vogue a year earlier.

A few years later, in 1995, she would become the new chairperson.

Now, she's worth a staggering $50m (approx. $75 million) thanks to her role in the fashion magazine empire.

Princess Diana made her first and only appearance at the Met Gala in 1996, just three months after finalising her divorce to Prince Charles.

She wore a John Galliano-designed silk slip dress – a gown she was reportedly worried would embarrass her eldest son, Prince William, then 14, according to royal biographer Katie Nicholl.
