Blake Lively's stunning Met Gala transformation into a real-life Lady Liberty

Kate Rafferty

Blake Lively has stunned once again at the Met Gala this year, transforming into a real-life Lady Liberty – or Lady Lively in front of our eyes.

Lively arrived arm-in-arm with husband Ryan Reynolds, both of whom are co-chairs of the even this year, wearing a rose floor-length gown decorated with an eye-catching reflective geometric pattern.

Around her waist, she was wrapped in a long satin tie-around skirt that bowed at her hip and trailed behind her.

Because more is always more, she added arm-length satin gloves that had a shimmering metallic finish at the end. Watch the video above.

But as Lively walked the Met Gala carpet, onlookers couldn't help but notice the hints of aquamarine poking out from her skirt and within the reflective pattern on her bodice.

As she climbed the famous Met Gala steps, we discovered just what those hints of blue were.

Helped by some suited up staff, Lively was quite literally unwrapped on the carpet, where we saw her rose coloured train removed to reveal a popping blue skirt.

Underneath, she revealed the true skirt attached to her geometric bodice – a beautiful aquamarine train that also wrapped around her waist, detailed with crystal embroidery. The staff also removed Lively's gloves to reveal aquamarine coloured ones, to match her skirt.

On her head Lively wore a sweet tiara and gorgeous three-tier stone drop earrings that featured a rose stone, then a blue stone and then another rose stone.

Lively's earrings and tiara were designed by American high jewellery designer Lorraine Schwartz – who the actress often works with.

Speaking to reporters, Lively revealed that her entire gown was designed by Versace, explaining the inspiration behind her look and how it fits into this year's theme, 'In America: An Anthology Of Fashion' with a focus on 'gilded glamour'.

"Instead of looking to fashion to influence this dress, I looked to New York City architecture and the classic buildings," Lively told reporters on the pink and blue carpet.

Pointing to her crystal-embroidered train she explained that it drew influence from Grand Central Station's famous constellation ceiling.

As for the geometric bodice, it was inspired by the Empire State Building, while the draping sash around her waist was to reflect the Statue of Liberty.

She added: "Plus [my] crown which has seven tiers – the statue of liberty has seven rays representing the sun's rays and then the seven seas and continents which refers to welcomeness, inclusivity and freedom...

"The statue has 25 windows so Lorraine put 25 stones at the bottom."

But E! Reporters have noted how Lively's dress transformation quite literally saw her transform into the Statue of Liberty right before us.

They note in the video above how the blue of Lively's dress also mimics the oxidised look of the Statue of Liberty.

Of course, her partner in crime also dressed just as smart, sticking to the 'white tie' theme that was also specified.

Dressed in Ralph Lauren, Reynolds wore an exquisitely tailored brown velvet suit, complete with a white bow tie, flower lapel and handkerchief.

Matching the carpet

Another aspect we couldn't help but notice was how similar Lively's dress tones matched the carpet she walked.

In 2020, Lively joked that she always seems to match her Met Gala looks to the carpet.

"When the carpet matches the Blakes. Met Ball 2018, 2017, 2016," she captioned a series of photos, which indeed showed how her dress matched the freshly laid down carpet for each event.

This year seems to be no different, with images revealing a distinct rose and blue coloured carpet for attendees to pose on.

There's really only one question to ask – does Blake Lively control the colours of the Met Gala carpet?

Considering the star always brings her A-game each year, we certainly have no issue with that.
