The stylish guests at the Queen's state banquet

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania wrapped up the first day of their UK state visit by joining the Queen and 170 guests for a four-course dinner at the London palace.

The dress code for the banquet was white tie or full service dress (including decorations or military service medals), which means each and every guest was exquisitely dressed for the occasion.

Melania Trump wore a white Dior  ivory silk crepe gown complete with matching opera-length gloves.

The gloves might seem an unusual choice but they adhere to the 'white tie' dress code, which allows for women to wear floor-length gowns and gloves, while the men are to wear white bow ties.

A look back at past state banquets and it seems the First Lady was simply following tradition, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush also wore gloves to the special event.

Kate Middleton wore a white floor-length Alexander McQueen, the Lover's Knot tiara --once a favourite of Princess Diana's -- and her recently awarded Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order sash.

Ivanka Trump opted for a baby blue Carolina Herrera gown, with pearl earrings and a pearl choker necklace. Her dress is said to retail for $17,000.
