Designer suing Alexander McQueen over Kate Middleton's wedding dress

It's one of the most photographed wedding dresses in recent memory and according to one designer it's a knockoff.

Hertfordshire-based bridal designer Christine Kendall is suing Alexander McQueen, claiming the fashion house's creative director Sarah Burton "copied" her ideas for Kate Middleton's wedding gown.

Kendall says she sent the palace some sketches for the Duchess to consider at the time of the royal wedding.

She claims she then received a letter from a royal official in January 2011 thanking her for the sketches and mentioning that the Duchess of Cambridge was "interested" in her work.

Kendall believes these sketches served as inspiration for Burton’s final product, which Kate wore down the aisle on April 29, 2011 as she married Prince William at Westminster Abbey in London.

In a YouTube clip from 2013, the designer even goes as far to say that without her "the royal wedding dress would not have looked as it did."

A spokesperson for the Duchess of Cambridge has toldThe Sunday Times that the royal never saw the designs, while the house of Alexander McQueen is calling the claims "ridiculous".

"We are utterly baffled by this legal claim," a McQueen spokesperson said.

"Christine Kendall first approached us at Alexander McQueen almost four years ago, when we were clear with her that any suggestion Sarah Burton's design of the royal wedding dress was copied from her designs was nonsense.

"Sarah Burton never saw any of Ms Kendall's designs or sketches and did not know of Ms Kendall before Ms Kendall got in touch with us—some 13 months after the wedding. We do not know why Ms Kendall has raised this again, but there are no ifs, buts or maybes here: this claim is ridiculous."
