From Vanessa Hudgens to Bec Judd: Iconic celebrity fashion moments at Coachella through the years
No event prompts months of maddeningly meticulous outfit-planning quite like Coachella Music Festival – and the event's 25th iteration is sure to be no exception.
As stars once again descend upon Indio, California to mingle amongst the masses for two weekends of sunflower-adorned debauchery, they're sure to feature timely nods to relics of Coachellas past.
So in the spirit of this year's 2016 resurgence, let's revisit some of the most culture-shaping ensembles to grace the palm tree-strewn valley over the years.

While past looks have not been without their caveats – from criminally cliché recreations of the bygone flower crown era to vaguely appropriative Indigenous-adjacent headdresses – they certainly sparked discourse.
But betwixt the wide-rimmed hats and ornamental face gems now considered synonymous with the event, there were the celebrity outfits that single-handedly defined the enduring "festival-chic" aesthetic.

Vanessa Hudgens, 2012
Hers was the singular look that defined an entire generation of fashion-forward festivalgoers, proving the blueprint for countless ensembles – and teenagers' Pinterest boards – to come.

Vanessa Hudgens was the undisputed queen of the celebrity Coachella crowd, becoming the poster child for its distinctly Tumblr-era brand of boho-chic.
And while many later looks proved instantly iconic in their own way, her itty-bitty floral bandeau, denim mini shorts and floor-trailing overlay was one that truly laid the foundation.
Alexa Chung, 2015

It's safe to say she wasn't the Arctic Monkeys' muse for nothing.
While perhaps best known for the signature Glastonbury knee-sock offering that inspired 2010's-defining album AM, it was Alexa Chung's mashup of high fashion and festival practicality in a white Chloé gown that was worth every bit of the song and dance.
Sienna Miller, 2014

Actress Sienna Miller presented a slightly more delicate take on the boho craze in 2014.
The star opted for a barefooted baby doll variation in stark contrast to Poppy Delevingne's edgy all-black look.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner, 2015

Joint honours go to Kylie and Kendall Jenner in 2015, who proved the epitome of the mid-2010s' specific brand of soft grunge.
Between Kylie's turquoise blue hair and cargo boot combo, and Kendall's boho vest and jorts, if you're looking for a time capsule of 2010's fashion, you've found it.
Alessandra Ambrosio, 2016

If this year's attendees have understood the assignment, they'll have already assembled looks reminiscent of Alessandra Ambrosio circa 2016.
A mainstay at the titular festival over the years, the model consistently showcased a cutting-edge combo of style and comfort – complete with the face gem-strewn makeup look that would go on to become Coachella's signature look.
Lindsay Lohan, 2010

The it-girl of the 2000s faced the new decade head-on in decidedly bold fashion.
At the 2010 festival she pioneered an influx of gladiator boots and sandals that we'd go on to see splashed across magazine pages for years to come.
Zoë Kravitz, 2015
In a curated clash of both hippy and grunge elements that just-so-happened to work, Zoë Kravitz presented a look straight from Tumblr dashboards far and wide at Coachella in 2015.

Gigi Hadid, 2015
Astride with Australia's very own Cody Simpson, Gigi Hadid went sans shoes in a billowing white number with a deep thigh slit and bandana.
She opted for stacked accessories in a clear reflection of the distinctly 2015 maximalist moment.

Bec Judd, 2022
I'd be remiss without throwing in an honourable mention for the Aussie Coachella icon herself.
Bec Judd carried on the festival's signature boho-chic aesthetic into the 2020s, sharing a series of insane snaps to her Instagram in 2022.
The then-39-year-old positively rocked this blood orange flute-sleeved ensemble by Melbourne-based brand J'Aton Couture.

Rhianna, 2012
The fact remains that no one does it quite like Rhi Rhi.
The personification of the 2010s' Indie Sleaze aesthetic, Rihanna's 2012 Coachella look was characterised by neon colors, overexposed flash photography and a gritty, chaotic mix of hipster and party culture.
In short, the vibe was practically made for her.

If the 2026 event understands the assignment, a long-awaited resurgence of this particular era of Coachella may be in store.
"Boho-Coachella", in all its flower crowned, crocheted and fringed glory, is officially coming back, and attendees are setting out to recapture the essence we've long since strayed from.
