Vet explains unique reasons why cats are obsessed with hair ties

If you've ever owned a cat, you would know of their unique fascination with hair ties. 

A curious choice of enrichment, a vet has revealed the surprising reason why our furry friends are so intrigued by the simple entertainment. 

Vet Dr Rebecca MacMillan also told Pets Radar about the unexpected dangers of hair ties.

Cats are among the most curiously-natured creatures on earth, known for investigating every scent and item in their surroundings. 

Due to their curiosity, MacMillan says that cats using their paws to play with hair ties is the best way for them to ascertain whether or not it poses any threat.

Aside from cats wanting to inspect any object that comes their way, the vet says that texture is another appealing attribute.

"Cats seem to like chewing on the elastic material of a hair tie," she told the publication. 

Movement is also a significant part of a cat's obsession with hair ties; MacMillan explains that they activate a feline's survival instincts. 

As cats used to need strong hunting abilities to survive, cats often engage in predatory behaviour with toys that mimic prey.

Heartwarmingly, cats may also find comfort in the scent of hair ties that have been used by their loved ones. 

"We can't know for sure, but what we do know is that cats have a very keen nose and there is something about hair ties that particularly appeals to them," MacMillan said. 

As adorable as it might be to watch your pet pawing away at a hair tie, the vet warns that it is important not to encourage the behaviour. 

Hair ties pose an incredibly dangerous threat to a cat's life if accidentally swallowed, as they could obstruct a cat's digestive tract. 

"From cases I've seen in practice, it is rarely just one hair tie that a cat swallows but multiple, often unnoticed and over a period of time. 

MacMillan added: "This is how blockages can occur. It is not worth taking the risk, so please keep hair ties well out of reach or safely stowed away."
