Expert explains why your cat always follows you to the bathroom

It's one thing for your cat to follow you around the house, it's another when they're wandering into the bathroom behind you.

It might feel like a slight invasion of privacy. But according to one expert, there's an "endearing" reason why cats actually do this.

"Following you is a sign of attachment," clinical cat behaviourist Amanda Campion said in a TikTok video shared to her thousands of followers.

She remarked the habit is "quite endearing".

In her video, the expert weighed in on other reasons cats might decide to wander into the bathroom with you out of all the rooms in the house.

One of these she revealed is that they're "curious creatures" when it comes to doors.

She explained cats see doors "as a barrier to something they may be missing out on".

"If you're closing the door when you go to the bathroom this could be one reason why."

Something else that can pique their curiosity is the "interesting smells" from the room.

This could be anything from the smell wafting from a plug hole to spraying products like deodorant, she pointed out.

According to the behaviourist, cats view a trip to the bathroom as "one on one time".

She explained, "they see it that you're there, no distractions."

"You're just a sitting duck."

When it comes to sneaking in the bathroom, there's one spot that's of particular interest to cats that might be surprising to some owners.

"They actually like to sit in the sink because it's a cocooning safe place and it's elevated too," the expert shared.

But for cat owners who struggle with a clingy or needy cat, Dr Katrina Warren shared her top tips with 9Honey on how to manage.

The vet says you first need to identify the cause of their clinginess – this includes ruling out any medical or underlying issues.

She also suggests having a routine and somewhere they can retreat when stressed.
