A sausage dog race has ended in pure chaos – but honestly, what else could've been expected?

The seventh annual Weiner Dog Race held in Wisconsin, USA, has left organisers frazzled after things didn't exactly go to plan.

In fact, things went so far off-plan the race has ended in major controversy.

A Wisconsin weiner dog race has ended in pure chaos. Today

Let us set the scene.

Imagine what could be close to 100 dachshunds sitting in a line at one end of a field, the only thing stopping them from jumping all over each other being their owners with a tight grip on their pooches.

Directly opposite the sausage dogs, further down the field, is what appears to be each pet's secondary human, ready to call their pup to victory.

The race zone is a rectangular shape – there are no lanes for each dog to run in, but rather a big space with organisers apparently hoping each dog would simply choose to run in a straight line.

But perhaps what is most perplexing about the set up is the fact the only thing defining the rectangular-shaped race area are a few yellow cones on either side, meaning the dogs could easily just head off on their own adventure.

The dogs completely disregarded the race course markers.  Today

So it appears maybe from the start, the seventh annual Weiner race may have not been incredibly well thought through.

Nonetheless, the race must go on!

As owners held their dogs back, pure excitement building up within the pooches, an event organiser signaled for the race to begin and as each owner let go, the chaos ensued.

As should have been expected, the dogs did not run in a straight line – despite their secondary humans calling out their name from the finish line.

With people yelling names and commands left, right and centre, the dogs ran wild all across the field, completely disregarding the markers placed to symbolise the race track.

You may be wondering how this exactly ended in controversy, but take a second moment to think about it.

Organisers weren't able to determine a winner.  Today

With pooches running wild all over the place, it became impossible for organisers to figure out which dog won the race.

You can only imagine the anger of some owners.

But, despite the chaos and controversy, it did make for an adorable video.
