Vet divides the internet with his controversial opinion on Labradors

A vet has taken to Tiktok to share a very controversial opinion.

Amir Anwary, who goes by the Tiktok handle amirthevet, posted a video on the platform explaining why he would never own a Labrador.

A Labrador is one of the most popular dog breeds in Australia, but Anwary had very strong opinions about why he would never own one himself.

"Labradors are one of the dog breeds that are actually genetically predisposed to becoming overweight and obese," he said. "Now, tell me, what is the one dog breed that literally loves to eat absolutely everything? It's a Labrador."

He went on to explain that when you combine a dog that loves to eat and a dog that gets fat easily, you end up with a dog that's always overweight.

"That's why mostly all Labradors that you ever see are fat," he continued. "And I'm a very weak owner like if my dog just looks at me I'll give it a treat, if I ever owned a Labrador that dog would be rolling around every room in my house.

"So I know my Labrador is going to be overweight."

He added that not only are Labradors predisposed to becoming overweight, they also have a predisposition for arthritis at young age, which can seriously affect their quality of life and is only worsened by excessive weight on their joints

"Most Labradors I see are overweight...I couldn't have a Labrador for those reasons," he said.

A 2016 study published in Cell Metabolism showed that a fault in Labradors genes is actually to blame for their predisposition to weight gain.

Scientists analysed genes known to be related to human obesity in both overweight and lean Labradors, and found that the issue lies in a gene known as POMC.

POMC plays a huge role in turning down hunger once the body has sufficient energy reserves.

They found that Labradors tended to have a deletion in the genetic code of the gene, scrambling it's ability to turn off hunger.

According to the scientists, it's this issue that leads Labradors to have an increased level of food motivation and a high rate of obesity.
