Top 10 best dog-friendly parks in Melbourne

If you're looking for dog-friendly spaces for a stroll in Melbourne you're spoiled for choice.

Known for being one of the world's most livable cities for humans, Melbourne has a lot on offer for our four-legged friends, too.

From large shared green spaces, vast reserves minutes from the CBD and parks to dog-friendly beaches, no pooch is likely to feel left out.

With that in mind, we've compiled a list of Melbourne's top 10 dog friendly parks for you to consider the next time you're out and about with your pooch.

10. Green Gully Reserve, Keilor Downs

This park is one for the adventurous pups.

It is fully fenced and boasts its own agility course with weaving poles, tunnels, platforms and ramps. For pooch owners with family there is a playground nearby.

9. Altona Dog Beach

Beach lovers have it all at this dog-friendly spot.

As the name suggests, dogs have free rein on the sands of Altona Dog Beach.

The beach is located north of the Altona Sports Club where there is lots of parking.

One tip for this spot is keep an eye on the tide - when the tide is in it swallows up much of the available sand.

However, there is a nearby fenced off-leash area at PA Burns Reserve.

8. Clayton Reserve, North Melbourne

This popular dog park is open to pooches 24-hours each day.

Located about 10 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, the park has 38 acres of off-leash space for pups to run around.

The park is designed in a triangle shape and has bench seats scattered at the park’s edges.

7. Darwin Parks, Alphington

It only seems right to be up front and mention the snakes.

There have been reports of snakes in the Darwin Parklands during the months of October through to April.

Melbourne Playgrounds says the park has an information board about what to do if your dog suffers a snake bite. It also lists the vets with supplies of anti-venom.

Outside of the snakes, the parkland has a large off-leash area nestled near a creek and lush bushland.

For pups keen for a swim, the creek offers a great spot for a dip.

6. Victoria Park, Abbotsford

This former home of the Collingwood Football Club is a favourite for dog owners.

The space has been transformed and includes a fenced football oval, community centre and public art. 

When there’s no sport on the oval dogs are allowed to race about off-leash.

5. Albert Park, South Melbourne

This parkland space is like a dog walking paradise.

There are multiple areas of the vast Albert Park where dogs are allowed to roam.

The majority of the space is on lead with two specific off lead zones within the park.

The only areas where dogs are not permitted is the lake and playgrounds.

4. Footscray Park, Footscray

As one of the largest Edwardian parks in Australia, Footscray Park offers an elegant dog walk.

The 15-hectare green space is located on the south bank of Victoria’s Maribymong River.

While it has a dedicated off-lead area for dogs to exercise, there are strict rules.

Outside of the off-lead area, dogs must be on-lead when five metres off the trail along the river and on lead in all other areas of the park.

Dog owners face fines if these rules are breached.

3. Royal Park, Parkville

This is a dog’s happy space.

Royal Park spans 170 hectares making it Melbourne’s largest open space.

The park is heritage protected so not all of it welcomes our four-legged friends.

However, there are three off-leash areas for pups to run about.

2. Princes Park, Caufield South

This parkland is popular among dog owners, fitness fans and picnickers.

The former Shilabeer’s Paddock was developed into a 10 hectares of parkland.

The family friendly park has a playground with swings and slides, monkey bars and climbing net and UFO spatial climbing frame.

It also has picnic shelters and four sports grounds. 

All sports grounds are off-leash areas with on-leash areas in the playground and picnic areas.

1. Edinburgh Gardens, Fitzroy

Edinburgh Gardens has been stamped as dog-friendly with almost half of the park designated for off-leash play.

Dogs are allowed on-leash in much of the remaining parts of this green space.

Pups are allowed off-leash in unfenced sporting areas when they are not in use for training or official games. They are not allowed on WT Peterson Oval.
