Firefighters in the US have freed a small dog after it had become trapped behind a toilet.

The crew from The Woodlands Fire Department in Texas described the situation as "a most unusual problem".

When they arrived at Tippy's owner's home they discovered the pooch "wedged" between the base of the toilet and the wall with only its head managing to get through the tiny gap.

"Firefighters found that "Tippy" was well and truly stuck," the fire department posted on Facebook.

After trying a few different options to get Tippy out, they had to remove a piece of sheetrock (plasterboard) to get the canine out.

Photos of the rescue posted on Facebook show the toilet seat being taken apart as Tippy's head pokes through the gap. In another picture you can see the back of Tippy's body on the other side of the toilet.

"Tippy was returned to his owner and was last seen dozing comfortably in a much less precarious place," the crew said.

The owner thinks Tippy might have ended up behind the toilet in an attempt to find a spot to cool down from the Texas heat, People reports.

The crew was praised for their efforts to free poor Tippy.

"It's just another day! Saving Tippy, our town, you and me! Thank you TWFD," a Facebook follower said.

"Great job!" another commented.

One follower admitted they have taken measures to avoid this kind of problem occurring in their house.

"We have plenty of room behind ours, made sure of that during the overhaul and upgrade," they said.

The fire crew's Facebook post was shared to another group called Montgomery County Happening Now, generating plenty of discussion about the situation.

"That's where are my guy goes when it storms. Thank God he's littler," one commented.

"I would love to hear a transcript of that call! If that happened at our house I don't know if I'd be hysterically crying or laughing," a woman said.

"Damn Tippy, go outside next time!" posted a member of the group.
