Australia's most popular dogs of 2020 have been revealed

The most popular dog breeds in Australia for 2020 have been revealed.

The cavoodle, a mix of a poodle and Cavalier King Charles spaniel, was the top hound in the country for both male and female dogs.

The French bulldog was the second most popular female dog, and golden retriever came next on the list for male dogs.

The data has been revealed by Pet Insurance Australia based on the dogs it insured this year.

"With the rise in pet ownership and those taking up pet insurance, we have seen some interesting comparisons between female and male dog breeds for this year," Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia said.

"The breeds listed are those who were born in 2020, and certainly shows a trend towards the designer cross breeds, such as the Cavoodle for both male and female."

Many crossbreeds also made the list

"The Maltese Cross has certainly been an Australian favourite for some time, and topped this list in 2019, and it's no surprise it makes the list once again in 2020," Crighton, said.

"While the very popular Staffy, German Shepherd and Border Collie are a popular choice in both the male and female category."

Winnie was the top name for a female Cavoodle in 2020, while the most popular male name was Milo.
