10 medium-sized dog breeds to know about, in order of height

If you're looking for the goldilocks of dogs – not too small but not too big – a medium-sized breed could be the answer you're looking for.

But with any dog breed, it's important to know how things like temperament and how big they can grow to, just to be sure you can fit them into your lifestyle.

So, without further ado, here are 10 medium-sized dog breeds in order of height to consider, and everything you need to know about them.

Dalmatian

Dalmatians are a high-energy dog breed.

This breed ranges closer to the large on the size scale, growing up to around 61cm at the tallest point on their shoulder.

Fun fact: they got their name because they're believed to come from Dalmatia in Croatia.

Australian Shepherd

Despite having an Aussie name, these dogs actually originated in the US. But just like a Border Collie or Kelpie, they're bred as herding and cattle dogs.

According to Purina, these dogs can weigh up to approximately 32kg.

But their size varies between the male and female dogs, with males growing between 51 to 58cm tall and females 46 to 53cm.

But just like a Border Collie, they're high energy and require lots of exercise. So probably not the ideal breed for potential pet owners with a small space or a busy schedule with not just time for a walk or run.

Border Collie

Like the Aussie Shepherd, the average size of a Border Collie differs between the sexes.

While the males range in height between 53 to 55cm tall, the females are shorter, ranging between 51 to 53cm.

Some might be surprised to learn Border Collie's had a royal fan back in the day.

Queen Victoria was apparently a fan of the breed back in the 19th century.

Shar Pei

Like Bulldogs, these pups are covered in distinct wrinkles.

They're playful and make for great family companions.

They're a bit bigger than some of the other medium-sized breeds, standing at up to 51cm tall and weighing in at 18kg.

Whippet

The pup pictured might look like a Greyhound, but it's not – it's a Whippet.

The breeds look somewhat similar, but Whippets are smaller.

The males can range between 47 to 51cm while the female stand at 44 to 47cm.

Cocker Spaniel

While we might simply call them Cocker Spaniels, the breed actually refers to two different variations: an English Cocker Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel.

According to Purina, an English Cocker Spaniel can weigh between 12.75 to 14.5kg.

The males can grow up to 41cm at the withers (the highest point of a dog's shoulder blades) while females slightly smaller at 39cm.

Beagle

One thing to know about Beagles: they love their food (and we mean love).

Beagles are very affectionate dogs and love a good cuddle.

They're on the smaller side, standing between 33 to 40cm at the withers, so perfect for families looking for a pup that's not too big.

Basset hound

You can probably spot a Basset Hound from across the park from their adorable long ears, short legs and droopy faces.

This breed is on the smaller side of the medium category, growing to around 38cm.

In terms of their temperament, they're on the more chill and low energy side.

Bulldog

Another popular medium-sized breed is the Bulldog.

These pups are known for their adorable wrinkles.

While their origins are tied to the sporting world, these pups don't actually require too much exercise.

As for their height, they tend to grow to be between 31–36 cm at the withers.

Corgi

You probably know Corgi's for being beloved by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

For those looking for a dog not too small but still on the smaller side, look no further than a Welsh Corgi.

The Welsh Corgi grows to stand at around 25.5 to 30.5cm tall and weighs up to 13kg for males and a slightly less 12.5kg for females.
