Six tips for keeping outside dogs cool on hot days

The warmer months are filled with sunshine and outdoor adventures with our canine companions. However, soaring temperatures can pose serious risks. Dogs don't have the same cooling mechanisms as humans, making them susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

Leaving your dog outside without a means to cool down poses significant risks. Dehydration and heatstroke can be life-threatening for your pet.  

Some dog breeds are more heat-sensitive than others. Brachycephalic breeds (those with flat faces), like bulldogs, French Bulldogs and pugs, are particularly vulnerable to heat-related issues. Be extra cautious with these breeds and avoid excessive heat exposure.

On very hot days it is recommended to have dogs indoors, ideally with the air conditioner running, but here are some tips to help an outdoor dog stay cool on warmer days.

1.Provide ample shade

This is essential and one of the simplest ways to keep your dog cool. Make sure there is adequate shade throughout the day as the sun will move. Trees aren't reliable, so consider providing an outdoor canopy or portable sunshade to ensure your pet has a retreat from the sun's intense rays.

2. Fresh water

Hydration is essential. The water bowl must be sturdy and your dog must not be able to tip it over or play with it. Fill it with fresh cool water daily and make sure the bowl will be shaded throughout the day as water can heat up to undrinkable temperatures quickly.

3. Cool mats   

Cooling mats designed for dogs can provide relief from the heat. These products utilise evaporation to keep your pet cool. They come in a range of styles and sizes. Do not leave unattended with a puppy, or a dog that is a chewer.

4. Kiddie pool

Many dogs love splashing in water. Provide a small kiddie pool filled with water in your backyard. Make sure you choose the right size for your dog and durable material. Never leave any dog unsupervised around water, be cautious with puppies, senior dogs and don't fill it high.

5. Frozen chew toys 

Many dogs enjoy chomping or licking on a frozen treat or chew toy; the icy treat will help them cool down. Stuff a KONG toy with any dog-safe wet food and pop it in the freezer overnight. It's best to supervise until you know your dog's chewing strength and whether it may chew through the toy (which is a choking hazard).

6. Be careful with dog houses

Depending on the design, the interior temperature of a dog house can become dangerously high, akin to a car left in the sun. Some designs hinder proper airflow, increasing the potential for your dog to overheat. Choose a design to minimise heat retention with good airflow and vents. Please place it in a fully shaded location and elevate it above ground level.

But if possible, limit outdoor time during the hottest hours of the day and have your dog in the coolest area of your home.
