Stray dog with fur so matted it was impossible to tell its gender is rescued by charity

A stray dog with fur so matted rescuers didn't know if it was a boy or a girl or if it even had two eyes has been given a makeover.

Blythe, as the pup was named, was found by Animal Angels Rescue Foundation in Las Vegas.

Rescuers were alerted to the stricken animal on a Facebook post, they said.

"We chose a gender neutral name, Blythe, because we didn't know if this kid was a boy or girl, the matting on this kid was so bad," the charity said.

"The vet wasn't sure this kid even had two eyes, the matting was so bad….we were tagged on a found post and immediately said we'd help….how could we not?

"Can you imagine living like that for that long?

"This kid was one of the worst cases we've seen and we wanted to get this kid to our vet and they were waiting."

Blythe shaved and given a bath and had his nails trimmed, the rescuers said.

It immediately made a difference to the hound, which was found to be a poodle-terrier mix.

"The mats were so bad, you couldn't tell his gender until after his shave," AARF said.

"Immediately, he felt better. After all, carrying all those heavy mats was tiresome, and they hurt."

Blythe was also found to be severely dehydrated. and needed other medical care.

"He was severely dehydrated, and from eating stones, and rock, and dirt, he ground down his teeth, so he has a lot of exposed nerves and roots," Animal Angels Rescue Foundation member Reegan Tabor told KLAS-TV

They called for donations to help the "very sweet boy."

While they were looking for the owner, they said he wouldn't necessarily be returned and will be put up for adoption.

"I'm sure he is relieved never having to live outdoors like that again," AARF, said.
