A woe begotten pup has found itself in the care of an animal shelter – after being abandoned in a neighbour's garden with nothing but a handwritten note.

The note in question, attached to 'Queeni' the dog, has since left shelter workers heartbroken.

"Hi. Sorry for dropping Queeni in your yard this morning, but I can no longer care for her." the regretful owner penned.

"Please take care of her," the bereft owner continued.

"She is good in the home, loves going outside in the yard, plays with her plastic bone, and likes to watch TV with you."

"She has never been around young children or other dogs. But she is a lovely dog."

"Please take care of her," the note repeated once again.

The shelter that took Queeni in then posted an appeal to their followers. Facebook

Queeni's story was shared by the Darlington County Humane Society, who made a post imploring followers to provide interim lodgings and love for the pup.

"Together, we save lives, and Queeni will need your to help her get back into a home," the post read.

They then made a public callout for volunteers to spend time with the shelter's furry guests, saying that just "sitting with a darling and loving on them," would make a world of difference for the animals.

"We are sure Queeni and her new friends here would appreciate that. Volunteers make a difference."

There came an outpouring of compassion in response to the post, with many followers expressing sympathy for the owner, and commending them for making the "difficult decision" to give up their beloved pup.

"Sweet angel girl. I know you're confused, but your family wants the best for you. God bless you and your family," one Facebook user commented.

Another was a little less sympathetic, labelling the owner irresponsible in the wake of the dog's dumping.

"Poor girl. Why do people get dogs they can't care for, and why don't people get their pets spayed and neutered?" they wrote.

A third was quick to commend the shelter and its staff, saying "It's gut-wrenching to see such a sweet baby having to go through this. But on a positive note, Queeni has a staff that is second to none at the Darlington Humane Society."

"She is being very well taken care of, and they will do everything in their power to find her the most loving home possible."
