Cat with two noses gets film-inspired name after being put up for adoption

A UK cat shelter has taken in a cat with two noses for the first time.

Cats Protection in Warrington has described Nanny McPhee as a "one-of-a-kind" whose rare facial feature is the result of a congenital abnormality.

"It doesn't cause me any discomfort, and all the staff and volunteers here say that it actually looks pretty cool," Nanny McPhee's adoption bio reads.

Staff didn't realise Nanny McPhee had the rare feature until a vet check-up revealed her snout wasn't actually large but a double nose.

The cat was named after the character played by Emma Thompson in the film of the same name because of their unique noses.

"Unlike my namesake, there isn't a stern bone in my body, I'm a lovely, gently lady," the cat's bio said.

Nanny McPhee the cat was put up for adoption because her owner could no longer care for her, reportedly due to health and financial reasons.

Congenital abnormalities commonly seen in cats include eye and heart defects, cleft palate, missing one or both testicles and more toes on their front paws than usual.

Earlier this year, US cat rescue NoCo Kitties came across a rare find of its own with Unicorn, a calico kitten.

The reason Unicorn is so special is because he is male, which only one in 3000 calicos are.

This is because a calico's fur colour is linked to their chromosomes, and generally only female cats carry the chromosomal combination needed for the calico pattern.

Unicorn was fostered by a shelter volunteer who suspected the kitten was male and had the sex confirmed by a vet.
