The most affectionate cat breeds - yes, they do exist

Cats have a reputation for being aloof and lacking affection that's not completely fair.

There are actually plenty of breeds out there that are friendly and love cosying up in the laps of their owners.

Maine coon

A calm cat with an even temper, ragdolls are generally happy to be held in their owner's arms. They love attention from humans and enjoy sitting in your lap. This breed gets its name because these cats go floppy and relaxed when picked up. Ragdolls are good with children and can be socialised to get along with other pets.

Scottish fold

Best known as the breed of two of Taylor Swift's three cats, Scottish folds are absolute sweethearts. They are relaxed but love cuddles and attention but are also happy enough on their own. This breed gets along with children, other pets and is very loyal to its owner.

Persian

A laid-back breed that loves quiet environments, Persian cats tend to seek out their owners for affection and cuddles. This breed doesn't tend to be active or playful so may suit someone looking for a buddy to chill out with at home.

Siamese

Unlike many of the other breeds on this list Siamese cats are quite vocal in a way that's almost like having a conversation with their owner. They are affectionate and smart and have a lot of energy so need enrichment activities and games.

Birman

A docile breed, Birmans are social and gentle. While they like affection, they don't demand it and appreciate interaction rather than attention. Birman cats are a good option for those who want a companion as they are known to follow their owners around. They are also good lap cats.

Burmese

Earning the description of 'dog-like' because of their energy, playfulness and intelligence, Burmese cats love attention and interacting with people. They love tummy rubs and being petted by their owner and can feel down if they are on their own for a while.

Sphynx

This hairless breed loves a good cuddle and seeks out warmth making them brilliant lap cats. They love attention and enjoy being social with people and other pets. Sphynx are a high-energy breed that loves playing and interacting with its owners.
