When you welcome a baby, everyone is so excited and generally showers that new little bubba with plenty of gifts.

But if you're thinking about bringing something to the mum, one woman wants you to know the item you should steer clear of buying.

In a post on Instagram Victoria shared a video of her daughter in a bassinet and explained which well-meaning gift she didn't like receiving while post-partum.

"The gift I hated most after having my first baby (that so many people bought me, even my husband)," read the text on her video.

Mum on the worst gift you could bring someone who just gave birth

New mum Victoria reveals the worst thing she was bought after having a baby.  Instagram

"I was in labour for 32 hours and had the added complication of shoulder of dystocia…so when I got home from hospital to eight bouquets of flowers, including a giant one from my husband…I could have cried (and NOT tears of joy) 😭," read the caption.

Instead of coming home to unpack her bag, or just enjoy a snuggle with her new baby, she had to find vases and prepare the flowers.

"It was the last thing I should have been doing, but I didn't want to seem ungrateful," the caption continued.

"What I really felt like was throwing them all out and concentrating on what I desperately needed… rest."

The flowers kept coming too, they took up space, required more water, the dead ones removed and it was a process that left her overwhelmed.

"The BEST gift I received was a box of chocolate brownies… the type that's delivered through the letterbox, so I didn't even need to shuffle to the front door with a newborn attached to my nipple to accept them. No work involved, aside from chewing!" she finished.

The post ruffled some feathers, with some calling her 'ungrateful' in the comments, but plenty of mums agreed with her.

"This was just one more thing to take care of and being a new mom is overwhelming enough. I personally hate cut flowers. Don't give me something that's dying to take care of," commented one mum.

Others shared the best gifts they got.

"My mum got me a cleaning lady to come do everything to lighten the load this was a huge help. I agree with you on the flowers. I loved any gift that made my life easier and eliminated a task," replied one woman.

Another mum wrote, "My best gifts were lactation cookies, oatmeal, a postpartum soup! All delivered to my stoop without a visit 😭❤️. When women understand what postpartum is they really deliver."

One woman suggested that if you do want to go with flowers, especially for a new mum, there's one key thing to include.

"You NEVER bring flowers without a vase… especially to a freshly postpartum mum," she replied.
