Mum outraged by 'sexist' washing instructions

When Sian Robson's daughter showed her the 'sexist' washing instructions on her hat, the mum was shocked and disappointed.

Caitlin, 13, drew her attention to a small message on the beanie from UK label Missguided: "... or give this to your mum she'll wash it."

Robson posted a photo of the offending tag on Twitter, with the hashtag #everdaysexism.

"Maybe it's just possible Dad is capable of putting on a wash too!?" she wrote.

"I know they're trying to be funny but it's a bit naff," the 52-year-old university manager said to the Sun. "It just didn't sit right with me."

"There are people out there who might not have a mum or parents who can do their washing for them so it is just extremely insensitive," she added.

Robson is now calling for Missguided to remove the tag from other products where it may appear.

She pointed out that the message was at odds with the brand's self-described mission, "to empower females globally to be confident in themselves".

"I'm not a person who complains a lot about things being sexist but I can see that these instructions aren't right," Robson told the Sun.

But a Sydney parent, replying to Robson on Twitter, commented that his daughter's Missguided hat (that she'd apparently since lost) had a different message

It actually said, give it to your dad he'll wash it," he wrote.

"Wish she had it still so I could photo it. They are random, and a joke."

The label was contacted for comment by both the Sun and the Daily Mail but so far has declined to respond.

Missguided was criticised in August last year for a neon sign in-store that read, "Send me nudes x".

After an online petition set up by one protester gained momentum, the sign was removed.
