Serena Williams' beautiful tribute to fellow parents: 'You inspire me'

From the moment she became a mother, Serena Williams has openly acknowledged the challenges inherent to juggling her sporting career with raising a child.

The tennis champion welcomed daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. in September 2017, and made her triumphant return to court the following year.

Since then, Williams has spoken candidly about the highs and lows of life as a working parent; for instance, being left in tears after missing her baby's first steps while she was training for a grand slam.

In a new social media post, the star athlete has reflected once again on the fine juggling act parents find themselves in - and tipped her hat to her fellow mothers and fathers around the world.

"I am getting ready for the first match of the year and my dear sweet baby [Olympia] was tired and sad and simply needed mama’s love. So if it means warming up and stretching while holding my baby that’s what #thismama will do," Williams captions two photos of herself cradling her daughter pre-match.

"As I head into next year it’s not about what we can do it’s what we MUST do as working mums and working dads. Anything is possible.

"My fellow mums and dads working- or stay home it’s equally as intense- but you inspire me. Hearing your stories makes me know I can do this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This year is to you."

It's not the first time Williams has paid tribute to her fellow parents.

During the 2018 French Open, she dedicated her now-iconic black catsuit to mothers who, like her, had endured a difficult pregnancy and labour.

"All the mums out there that had a tough pregnancy, and had to come back and try to be fierce in the middle of everything, that's what this represents," she explained after the striking outfit made world headlines.

However, not all of Williams' parenting posts are so sincere or serious. Just last month, she shared pictorial evidence that even grand slam champions can't resist 'twinning' with their little ones.

"This mama waited my whole life to be twins with her," she captioned a photo of herself and Olympia wearing identical panelled dresses.

Fingers crossed Williams will continue to be so open about her parenting experiences in 2019.
