Mum calls out bullies after heartbroken preschooler was the only child not invited to class birthday party

Being a parent of young children is not always easy and sometimes mums have to deal with difficult situations.

Bullying is an issue many parents have to confront, which can impact a child's mental health, and it can take many forms, with exclusion one of them.

Now, a mum in the US has shared the heartbreaking moment her preschool-aged daughter told her she was the only child not invited to a peer's birthday party.

Her response has been praised after a video of the exchange went viral, with singer Meghan Trainor among those reaching out.

Alyssa Miller is a 'girl mama' who says on her TikTok account that she is 'spreading kindness.'

But the sad exchange with her daughter that she shared this week showed not everyone is kind.

The video starts with Miller in the front seat of a car as she picks up her daughter Finley, who is five, from a Florida preschool.

Across the screen is written, "This is what it looks like when you exclude a child.

"Inviting every kid in the class to a birthday party, except one," the video continued.

"One sweet, amazing and kind little girl who is now heartbroken."

Miller can then be heard asking her daughter, "How do you know that you didn't get invited?" before her daughter answers, "She told me."

Her mother then replies, "I'm sorry. That's not nice."

The little girl is then heard tearfully explaining to her mum the girl had told her she was the only person in the class not getting invited to the party and that "everyone else is invited."

Her mother again says, "I'm sorry," before her daughter climbs into her arms for a cuddle.

Her mum, who is also in tears, then tells her daughter, "I am sad for you because that's not nice," before continuing, "That's not how we treat other people. Right?"

Her heartbroken daughter replies, "Yes."

Miller continues, "And you're so beautiful, you're so kind. It has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.

"I love you. You are worthy of great, amazing friends. Sometimes they just take a while to find," she tells the little girl, who agrees and tells her mum she loves her.

Miller uploaded the video with the comment, "I debated on whether or not to share this.

"But my girl is just so heartbroke [sic].

"Raising your child to think it's acceptable to intentionally leave out another child and make them feel less-than is something I will never be OK with.

"Teach your babies to be kind and welcoming to everyone.

"I thought I would have years before something like this happened but sadly here we are in VPK (Voluntary pre-Kindergarten)."

She uploaded the video with the hashtags #kindness #teachkindness #bekind #bullies #bully #leftout #kidsoftiktok #parentsoftiktok and #momsoftiktok.

The video has so far been viewed a staggering 25.7 million times in just three days, and received 4.1 million likes.

Among the more than 109,000 commenters was singer Meghan Trainor, who wrote, "I'll invite her OMG," followed by four crying emojis and the comment, "Tell her I love her."

The video also caught the eye of the US Today show, who interviewed Miller and a parenting and youth development expert Dr Deborah Gilboa, who tried to find a silver lining.

"In the broader scheme of things, it's probably going to make your kid more empathetic," she told Today.

"And also, you have an amazing opportunity to help them believe in themselves and to give them coping strategies on how to handle hard things."

Miller further discussed the incident in a follow-up video the next day in which she said she was "beyond grateful and thankful" for the responses, which were mostly kind.

She said she released the video to "remind your children to be kind" and never expected it to "take on a life of its own as it did."

She said she was glad it was shining a light on bullying, which she said started in the home.

"Remember, your children are always watching you. Please be kind to everybody," she said.
