'Why I wouldn't want my mum in the birthing suite with me'

OPINION -- Kourtney Kardashian-Barker has admitted she didn't initially want Kris Jenner to be present for the birth of her son Rocky after her mum boldly arrived at the hospital while she was in labor.

And as a mum-of-two, I don't blame her.

The reality star explained Jenner announced she was "in the area" and on her way up, and while she was initially planning to keep her mother out of the room, it was her husband Travis Barker who convinced her to let Jenner stay for the birth.

I know they work in reality TV and therefore thrive on these moments, but I don't think it is OK for her mum to bulldoze her way into the birth of her 13th grandchild.

If my mum had done that, I would be absolutely fuming.

The birth of your child, no matter if it's your first, second or, in Kourtney's case, fourth, is a really special and intimate moment – one that I wouldn't want anyone other than my partner being privy to.

Luckily for me, my mum knows better than to attempt to show up.

Because with every birth you go through, you also experience a rebirth of your own.

It changes you, and if you are doing this with a partner it changes them and your relationship too. And I don't think anyone else needs to be a part of that monumental moment of change.

Not to mention the long list of complications that can go wrong along the way.

If I think back to my first birth, which was long and somewhat traumatic, if my mum had edged herself onto the scene, I would be thinking more about the extra pair of eyes on me and how much she'd be worrying than actually worrying about myself in that moment of vulnerability.

Selfish, perhaps – but isn't childbirth one of those moments in our lives we can be selfish and make all the decisions because it's our body?

Also, there is already a cast of thousands in the birthing suite. You can clearly see in Kourtney's case, there are so many people surrounding her that Jenner can barely get a glimpse of her daughter from the back of the room.

It was certainly the case for both my births, which resulted in C-sections.

But let's take a moment for the mums who have a vaginal delivery. There's a lot going on that I don't really think a mum/future grandmother needs to see or be part of.

There's plenty of time the day after, the week after, even a month after for the grandparents to bond with their new grandchild – it doesn't need to happen the very instant the baby comes out.

Now, Kourtney does go on to say it was a "really special" moment shared between the three of them, but I can't help but think she's been robbed of that one-of-a-kind moment that was meant for her and her husband.

They've missed out on that moment together: the moment time stops, the whole world melts away and the three of you are inside your own little newborn bubble.
