John Legend on IVF: ‘You want to feel like everything’s working properly...but sometimes it’s not’

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen were overjoyed with the birth of daughter Luna in April 2016.

But the musician and model have never made it a secret that they turned to IVF to help with the process after struggling to conceive naturally.

Now, the couple have revealed they're returning to IVF in the hopes of giving their 18-month-old daughter a little brother or sister.

Speaking to Cosmopolitan in the US, John admitted the process has made their ten-year relationship even stronger.

“Having a baby is a big challenge for a couple, and going through that together strengthens your bond because if you make it through [having a child], you know you can make it through anything,” John said.

“I think it’s especially difficult when you can’t conceive naturally. You want to feel like everything’s working properly and want everything to be perfect, but sometimes it’s not.

“I wouldn’t say we can’t conceive naturally, but I would say that it’s enough of a challenge where it felt like we needed help.”

John also spoke about the couple’s IVF journey on UK morning television, saying people shouldn’t be afraid to talk openly about the taboo topic.

“A lot of people struggle with fertility and they shouldn't be ashamed of it.

“A lot of people want to have kids and maybe can't do it the natural way... I think people should do it if that's what will work for them.”

Chrissy has also previously spoken about their decision to go down the IVF route, saying it was a struggle to get their head around at first.

"The big question was why this wasn’t working for us when I was young and he was healthy,” she said in an interview with Self Magazine.

“I thought, people get pregnant by accident all the time! How does this happen?”

However, Chrissy said the more they spoke about it, the more they realised just how many people had been through it - one in six Australia couples have trouble conceiving naturally, according to IVF Australia.

The couple began dating in 2007 after the Sports Illustrated model appeared in the music video for his song, Stereo.

They got engaged four years later, before marrying in September 2013 in Lake Como, Italy.
