The cruel comment Kayla cops every time she plans a holiday: 'Cried for days on end'

Smiling into the camera on an idyllic beach, Kayla Djukic hit record and predicted it would be her and husband Alan Djukic's last holiday '"just the two of us".

They had big plans to start a family when they got home. 

Little did they know, a rollercoaster two-year infertility journey lay ahead; a journey peppered with ignorant comments like "go on a trip, you'll get pregnant".

Last week, Kayla hit out at that phrase in an Instagram Reel shared with her 23,000 Instagram followers and received an outpouring of support she wasn't expecting.

"I wasn't sure how people would perceive it, but the support has been amazing. I have received nothing but love," she tells 9honey.

Infertility is a medical diagnosis and despite common myths and misconceptions, booking a holiday won't change it.

Kayla's had to explain that to too many people since sharing her and Alan's infertility journey with family and friends.

The young couple from Canada spent almost a year trying to conceive before they realised something was wrong and sought medical advice.

Initially, they assumed there was something wrong with Kayla. They were shocked when, after a slew of tests, Alan was the one diagnosed with infertility.

"Many people assume it's always something wrong with the woman, which nowadays is a huge misconception," Kayla says.

About one third of infertility cases in Australia are caused by male reproductive problems, according to the Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand.

Though Kayla wasn't the one with the medical diagnosis, she's felt the effects of infertility keenly.

"I'm still greatly affected by it physically, mentally and emotionally. I have felt sad, depressed, cried for days on end, I even gained some weight from all the stress," she says.

As soon as they got the diagnosis, they started researching other couples' infertility experiences online and couldn't believe some of the ignorant comments they had received.

"I sometimes even thought, 'There's no way someone actually said that'. Until I was put in the same position," Kayla says.

Since sharing their infertility with family, friends and acquaintances, Kayla and Alan have copped plenty of ignorant comments of their own, from "go on a trip, you'll get pregnant" and "just go get drunk one night".

"We have a literal medical diagnosis that is hindering and limiting our chance to conceive, so it is very ignorant to suggest that going on a vacation will solve that," Kayla says.

Fed up with having to correct people and debunk those myths about infertility, she made an Instagram video breaking down why telling a couple experiencing infertility to "go on a trip, you'll get pregnant" is "extremely hurtful" and posted it.

Kayla was nervous about how people would react at first, fearing she would be trolled or attacked.

Instead, she was flooded with support and kindness, especially from people who understood exactly where she was coming from.

"I know millions of people are going through the same thing, in silence, so I decided to post about it because I want to help those people," Kayla says. 

"I want to be a voice for them. I want them to feel less alone."

She plans to keep sharing her journey online to raise awareness and debunk common misconceptions about infertility, like that the "problem" always lies with the woman, or that a vacation can fix a medical problem.

"I don't think 'lack of knowledge,' it's a good excuse," she adds, "you might not necessarily ever experience infertility, I can guarantee someone you know, love and care about will."

Kayla and Alan will also be pursuing IVF in the hopes of having a child together. It will be costly, and they're grateful it's an option they can afford to pursue.
