#Twinning: 'Don't make these comments to a woman who's pregnant with twins. Trust me'

Laura Turner

Am I hyper-analysing? Maybe. Am I a li’l sensitive right now? Probably. But really, what is with the negativity?

Since going public with my pregnancy I’ve copped some comments that have hit me for six.

“Oh, your life is over now!” "Kids ruined my life!” “You’re going to get so fat!” “You’re already so big!” and so on.

When they find out it's twins, well, you’re on a whole new level. “TWINS?! What did you do to deserve that?” “You’re in for a hard time aren’t you?” or “Oh, it's two girls... oh well."

Really? REALLY, people? What do you want me to do - hop in a time machine and reverse this whole (absolutely beautiful) “situation”?

It's funny, the comments people make without a second thought as to how it might affect you. I’m lucky I can laugh at it all, but I do feel for the women out there who might be struggling with the reality of their pregnancy, and when they cop a comment like that it could really eat away at them.

For me, I've been lucky there have also been so many incredibly supportive responses to counteract the crap. I remember being so touched when the first person said to me, “Laura, you and Dan are going to be an incredible parents” - stuff like that blows all the negativity out of the water.

And you know what else does? Seeing our girls.

We had our 20-week scan a few days ago and it was so wonderful. Apart from the bit where, due to a twin-scan being twice as long as a normal one, I blacked out, came close to throwing up and had to have jelly beans shoved down my throat to 'bring me back’, I was once again wowed by the incredible miracle that is pregnancy.

When you’re in that room, looking up at the screen and seeing your own two daughters kicking and punching away in utero, it really puts all the superficial stuff in perspective.

One day those girls might cop a little negativity of their own, and its my responsibility to teach them how to shrug it off. The answer to that is quite poignant to me right now - it's whats inside that counts.
