Raw egg and a sock: The unconventional teething remedy raising eyebrows

There's a reason teething is so dreaded among parents.

One day you have a happy baby who eats and sleeps as they should, the next they're screaming for hours, refuse to leave your hip for even a second and no pain relief seems to make a difference.

So it's understandable that parents look to some unconventional remedies in a moment of desperation. But while teething beads are one thing, one influencer's method has raised eyebrows.

The reason? It involves a raw egg and a sock. And after influencer Erin Simpson shared the method on her Instagram, it has left many people baffled.

The method is exactly as it sounds. You take a whole egg and place it (uncracked) in a sock, and hang this up in your baby's room (or in Simpson's case, in the cot).

The idea is that the egg with trap any carbon monoxide, which according to an old wive's tale puts added pressure on their little gums, causing the pain.

As the New Zealand-based mum told Stuff, she was willing to try it on her son Harry, five months. "I don't know where the correlation is with the egg in the sock, but that's what someone came up with many moons ago," Simpson said.

"I was like, 'Oh God, I'll try anything.' I had the sock, I had the egg so (I tried it."

Simpson also pointed out that Harry was not yet rolling, so she felt comfortable placing the egg closer to his cot, and swears 'he hasn't had a bad night since'.

The method has also been gaining traction on TikTok, where countless parents have filmed their own #sockegg creations.

User Jessbrownsberger recorded herself trialing the method, which drew scepticism from her followers.

"Where is the science behind this? because it sounds like a bunch of hoopla," said one. "Mommas' so sleep deprived (we're) hanging egg socks over our child's head," joked another.

While others praised the method for bringing them some much-needed peace.

"We hung ours above the door frame of the room on the opposite side of her bed. Worked like a charm still," said one.
