Anne Hathaway says getting pregnant is not always a positive thing

Mum-of-two and Hollywood star Anne Hathaway has opened up about motherhood and her thoughts on pregnancy - saying the experience is more "complicated" than just "getting pregnant and having kids."

The actress who shares two boys with husband Adam Shulman, Jonathan, six and Jack, two, revealed in an interview with WSJ Magazine that they may not be done having kids saying she: "could see us going for another one."

And while discussing the option, Hathaway says it's something that requires a lot of thought and understanding, "There's this tendency to portray getting pregnant, having kids, in one light, as if it's all positive. But I know from my own experience … it's so much more complicated than that."

Opening up about the challenges of pregnancy, the mum says she was relieved to find out early on that she wasn't the only woman who had the same experience.

"When you find out that your pain is shared by others... you just think, I just feel that's helpful information to have, so I'm not isolated in my pain," she revealed.

"I mean, what is there to be ashamed of? This is grief, and that's a part of life."

During her last pregnancy in 2019, Hathaway opened up on Instagram about her struggles to conceive, "For everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies."

Though despite all the heartbreak, she told WSJ Magazine that she didn't feel complete until she became a mum.

"It's not like I was lacking integrity, but it made me want to be completely, on every level, true to my word," she said. "And that meant stopping any nonsense that I had going on inside myself. And it's little breaks that you give yourself sometimes when you know that you're not being your best self."

She said she never really fully felt like she "landed" until she became a mum to her two sons.

Now that they are growing older and coming into their own, Hathaway says she hopes that they don't take an interest in her career from too young of an age.

"I would encourage them to study, to go to classes, to read, but I would strongly discourage them from starting too young," Hathaway continued. "I think that they'll be in a position where they'll be able to go to college and figure out where they want to go from there."

A stance she's adopted from her parents, who said the same to her, "I would probably take the same tack that my parents did with me, which is: You have all the time in the world to be a professional actor; you can only be a child once."
