Fake heiress Anna Sorokin convicted of scamming banks and businesses

Fake Heiress Anna Delvey has been convicted on a number of charges in a New York court on Thursday.

The jury found the 28-year-old, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, guilty of scamming banks and businesses out of tens of thousands of dollars as she lived an extravagant life as a socialite, convincing people she was a wealthy German heiress.

A Manhattan jury found Sorokin guilty of four counts of theft of services, three counts of grand larceny and one count of attempted grand larceny following a month-long trial that attracted international attention.

The proceedings were also delayed when Sorokin didn't like her wardrobe choices and hired a stylist for her court appearances.

The jury - which included nine women and three men - deliberated for two days before returning their verdict.

While Sorokin was found guilty on one count of attempted grand larceny for trying to take out a $22 million loan from a bank, she was acquitted on a second attempted grand larceny charge, for trying to secure the same loan from a different bank.

She was also acquitted of one count of grand larceny, which involved leaving her former friend Rachel Williams with a $70,000 bill for a trip to Morocco, which was meant to be an all-expenses paid vacation from the 'heiress'.

However, Williams is understood to have made somewhere close to $600,000 from selling her story, which is now also being developed into a Netflix series by Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes.

The fake socialite is alleged to have stolen $275,000 between November 2016 and August 2017, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, and is accused of providing "falsified bank documents" to secure a $22 million bank loan.

Sorokin will be sentenced on May 9 and could face between five and 15 years behind bars defence attorney, Todd Spodek, said.

The 28-year-old also faces deportation to Germany because authorities say she overstayed her visa.
