Most popular items at this year's EOFY sales

With just three days left of the End of Financial Year Sales (EOFYS), there are still plenty of incredible bargains to be had, with consumer group CHOICE highlighting the top five most popular items savvy Aussie consumers are searching for.

"The End of Financial Year Sales are a great time to pick up some bargains, provided you do your research and don't feel pressured to buy products that aren't right for you just because they're on sale," says CHOICE Consumer Advocate Jonathan Brown.

"We lab test products based on their real world usage and the most common features CHOICE members and the community are looking for. Remember that the sales are designed to make you feel like you're missing out - buy the product on sale if it's right for you, but with sales all year round now, there's no need to rush," says Brown.

1. Mattresses

The days of having to spend thousands of dollars on a decent mattress are gone, thank goodness, and if you're in the market for one there are some great selections online that have been heavily discounted for the EOFYS.

Brown says it's not just a great price consumers should be on the lookout for.

"When looking for a mattress this sales season, it's important to know what your sleeping style is," he says. "There's no point buying a mattress on sale that doesn't fit how you sleep. Be on the watch out for mattresses that advertise a high level of firmness, but don't deliver in the real world."

2. Washing machines

The choice between a front-loader and a top-loader is easier these days, thanks to advances in technology when it comes to front-loaders, which are typically more affordable but can't handle larger loads.

Still, Brown says the decision mostly comes down to a lifestyle difference between the two.

"Front-loaders tend to perform better and use less water than top-loaders, but there are pros and cons to each type," he explains. "You might be tempted to get a washer-dryer combo in the sales, but they can use a staggering amount of water if you're environmentally conscious."

3. Electric heaters

During the winter months, it isn't a surprise that electric heaters are one of the most popular items in the EOFYS. Of heating devices, Brown says customers should consider something that will serve them all year around.

"You're really better off investing in a good reverse-cycle air conditioner long term, but if you're going for a portable electric heater, it's vital that the heater circulates heat well," he says. "You can make the most of your heater by setting your ceiling fan to winter mode."

4. Fridges

Shopping online for fridges can make it difficult to gauge whether or not you are buying the right size and if it will fit in your kitchen space. These days they come in a variety of heights and widths, which means careful measuring is needed before committing to such a major purchase, regardless of the price.

Brown's advice: get the biggest one you can that fits into your space.

"There's nothing worse than buying a fridge and realising it's not big enough for everyone in your home," Brown advices. "For a house of three to four people, you'll need up to 530L capacity."

He adds to be careful of fridges that "prioritise style over function."

5. Televisions

Imagine watching your favourite TV shows on a sleek new television you've nabbed at one of the EOFY sales. Brown says the fact television technology is evolving so quickly means customers have their pick of a wide variety of functions and styles.

He says while it can be confusing, you just need to know what to look for.

"TVs are constantly evolving, which can make your choice confusing, but the upside is you can get great discounts on last year's models if you know what to look for," he says. "If you learn the model codes, you can try and negotiate a better discount on the older models, which can still look and sound great."
