President Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr has revealed he wants to follow in his father's footsteps by going in to politics — and may run for governor of New York.

Trump Jr has taken over the running of the Trump Organisation with his brother, Eric since his father became President, but he reportedly told the F6 Labs gun club in the city he misses being on the campaign trail.

"Going back to doing deals is boring after 18 months", he told the audience, according to the New York Post. "The politics bug bit me".

A guest told the newspaper Ivanka's brother then revealed his own political ambitions.

"Don Jr. said he is interested in running for office, such as governor of New York, but the position of mayor of New York would be less interesting to him", they said.

Trump Jr reportedly dismissed becoming a senator or member of Congress.

"Do I want to be behind the scenes and be a mouthpiece and fight back against crazy liberal media? Maybe", he said.

The 39-year-old is a keen shooting enthusiast and told gun club members he would lobby to protect the Second Amendment. He's caused controversy on social media by posing with 'trophy kills' including a leopard.

It's not clear when Trump Jr will decide whether to run for governor of New York. Current governor Andrew Cuomo — who has clashed with the new President over his policies on immigration, Obamacare, climate change and the relaxation of gun laws — is up for re-election in 2018.
