'Why this kiss was the most special moment of our wedding day'

Laura Jones was just five years old when she met her future husband. 

While this sounds like the start of your classic rom-com, neither Laura nor Aiden have any recollection of their first encounter at a disability physio clinic in Perth.

Somewhat fatefully, the moment was not only caught on camera, but printed in the local newspaper.

“My mum came across this clipping, and Aiden’s mum found it too, and they’re like, ‘Look at this, this is you two!’” Laura, now 23, tells 9Honey.

“At that point it was a bit, like, ‘girls germs’ and ‘boys germs’ so we never used to hang out,” Laura laughs.

“We hung out a lot and would text and talk all the time, it just grew from that,” Laura says.

“We have carers 24/7 to help us out with anything we need - preparing food, taking us to the toilet, helping us get dressed,” Laura explains.

As it turns out, carers are also very good at helping pull off a surprise marriage proposal.

The couple had been out for “a normal lunch” in Northbridge, Laura recalls, but she had no idea there was a plan afoot as they said goodbye and prepared to travel home separately.

“When we were going home, Aiden told my carer to drive me to Kings Park instead,” she says.

“There’s a little waterfall with a bridge in front of it, and Aiden was sitting there waiting for me.”

“It was raining but it didn’t bother us. It was really busy, a tight schedule, but it was really good,” she says. 

Of all the beautiful photos from their wedding day, Laura says the one of her kissing her new husband in the middle of a road represented a particularly special part of the day.

“That was probably our favourite moment - it was away from everyone, the first time we had together without a whole lot of people around us,” she says.

Zoe Theiadore of Ebony Blush Photography, who photographed Laura and Aiden's wedding day, likened capturing the kiss - the last portrait of the shoot - to a "rollercoaster of emotions".

"Laura and Aiden both needed assistance to kiss, but they were determined to get it as it meant so much to them. Being a road, cars kept coming, but we persisted -in the rain!" Zoe tells 9Honey.

"Finally, they were both positioned comfortably and were able to kiss. This in itself was so magical, but Aiden especially was quite wet by this point. 

Zoe says it was a "magical" moment not just for the couple, but for her as a photographer.

"Shooting weddings every weekend, you become so used to the ease of a kiss and how simple it is. But to these two, it was something entirely magical," she adds.

Because of the equipment they require for their daily care and mobility, the newlyweds need a home that’s wheelchair accessible and large enough to fit both of their electric beds.

For now, they’re still living separately - Laura with her mum, and Aiden in another house - while they wait for the Department of Housing to find them a suitable property.

“[The night after the wedding] was our first time going to a hotel where there were two beds and we could sleep next to each other. That was really special,” Laura explains. 

The honeymoon was another significant ‘first’ for Laura and Aiden: their first holiday together, a cruise from Brisbane to the Great Barrier Reef.

If they're lucky, the couple could find themselves on a second honeymoon. They've been nominated for Easy Weddings' Wedding of the Year competition, with the prize being a holiday to Thailand.
