Bulk buying is a blessing and a curse – the allure of a bargain in times dominated by an inflated cost of living is understandable, but when done wrong, could end up with money wasted.

Costco, however, has an extremely lenient returns policy whereby shoppers can make change of mind returns on most items at any time, and yes, this includes food, both opened or unopened.

There are, of course, exceptions to the rule – but not necessarily for the items you might think.

According to Costco's return policy for change of mind, members can be refunded in full regardless of the reason for almost all merchandise, no matter how long ago the purchase was made.

Similarly, if members become dissatisfied with their membership at any time, Costco will offer a refund in full for any reason.

Not all items are able to be returned for a full refund for a change of mind, however, and one such exception is certain electronic goods that have been purchased on or after August 31, 2020.

Costco Wholesale's change of mind return policy only applies for 90 days from the date of purchase for certain electronic goods.

These include televisions, projectors, major household appliances including refrigerators, freezers, rangehoods, cooktops, microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers.

Touchscreen tablets, smart watches, computers, cameras – including aerial cameras like drones and security cameras – camcorders, MP3 players, mobile phones and portable air conditioners are also unable to be returned after 90 days for change of mind.

Watches and diamonds can be returned, but only after their authenticity can be verified.

Costco members returning a diamond one carat or larger must present all the original paperwork in the form of an International Gemological Institute certificate and/or a GIA certificate, and once the authenticity can be verified, the refund will be approved – though the process can take between two to five business days.

Bullion, however, can not be returned at all due to market volatility and price.

Similarly, custom products purchased through special order kiosks or products that have been custom-installed and manufactured to members' specifications are not up for return for change of mind.

Hearing aid products are also not available to be returned under the reason of change of mind.

Be sure to double check your purchase agreements, however, as the policy may be restricted in future – though customers will be notified at the time of purchase.
