YouTuber called out by politician for throwing insensitive party

American YouTuber Jake Paul is facing online backlash from a Californian mayor for throwing a party at his home.

Paul, 22, documented the day-long event on social media, with footage showing his high-profile guests not wearing masks, despite face coverings being mandatory in the US during coronavirus.

The YouTuber, who has more than 20 million followers, appeared to shoot across six different locations to create a music video during the party.

Mayor of Calabasas Alicia Weintraub told Fox 11 residents of the town were "outraged" by Paul's event, adding there was a "no-tolerance policy" for conduct that violates public health orders.

"They're having this large party, no social distancing, no masks, it's just a big, huge disregard for everything that everybody is trying to do to get things back to functioning," she said.

Weintraub slammed the party's guests, claiming they were "acting like COVID doesn't exist."

The attendees, including several online influencers, shared images and footage of themselves drinking, dancing, and even playing on heavy machinery situated near the home.

Internet personality Bryce Hall was captured 'swinging' from an excavator.

In an email to Insider, Weinstrub added, "I am committed to keeping our community safe and we are working with the Lost Hills Sheriff Station to ensure enforcement."

Fox LA reporter Bill Melugin posted a clip recorded during the party, revealing a room of what appears to be hundreds of attendees in close quarters, drinking and dancing together.

He reported that Weintraub had called the event "irresponsible, selfish, & say it's businesses & workers who pay the price for this with lockdowns."

Not all YouTubers were on board with Paul's party, however, with popular personality Tyler Oakley writing a simple "f--- you Jake Paul" on Twitter.

Paul has not apologised for hosting the party, and instead retweeted Oakley's comment.

Other Twitter users criticised the YouTuber, one writing: "Who cares if it was a music video. Literally all filming has stopped for months, live events have stopped, people have lost their jobs because nothing is in production but he thinks he's above everything and decides when production can kick back on?"

"Must be nice to have such an inflated idea of self importance. As community service he should have to turn up and work in a covid wing of a hospital or something," commented another.

On Monday, California governor Gavin Newson ordered the state's counties to shut down the operations of entertainment facilities, including bars, restaurants, theatres and museums, to combat the rising number of local COVID-19 cases.

California has the second highest amount of coronavirus cases in the United States, currently standing at 355,000.
