Coleen Rooney reveals how she 'caught' Rebekah Vardy selling stories about her

A year after the 'Wagatha Christie' scandal broke, Coleen Rooney has revealed the fake social media posts she used to 'catch' Rebekah Vardy leaking stories to the press.

In October 2019, Rooney took to social media with a lengthy post accusing Vardy of selling information about her and her family to the press.

The only catch was that the stories Vardy allegedly leaked were fakes that Rooney had carefully shared to private Instagram Stories, to catch Vardy in the act.

What followed was months of explosive back and forth accusations as Vardy defended herself, while Rooney held fast to her claims.

Now the controversy – dubbed the "Wagatha Christie" scandal by fans – has made headlines again.

Rooney has revealed the fake Instagram stories she used to catch Vardy out, releasing them as part of a lengthy court document according to the Daily Mail.

She and Vardy are currently embroiled in a vicious legal battle at the UK's High Court as Rooney works to prove her case while Vardy tries to clear her name.

Details of Rooney's carefully planned social media trap were laid out in the 55-page document, which also contained screenshots of the Instagram Stories Rooney planted.

In each one, Vardy appears to be the only person who has viewed the story.

One shot of a plane screen hints at Rooney travelling to Mexico for gender selection, another mentions a TV career in Australia while a third references her basement flooding.

All three link to false stories about Rooney that were published in UK tabloids prior to the scandal; stories she claims Vardy sold to the press.

"The unauthorised disclosure of private material from the Defendant's private Instagram account was deeply distressing to the Defendant. The Defendant was left not knowing who to trust," the document reads, via the Daily Mail.

A spokesperson for Rooney also told the outlet that she "takes no pleasure" in revealing these details in a bid to prove her case against Vardy.

They also claimed Rooney had offered to settle the matter via "private mediation", but Vardy insisted on taking it to court.

For her part, Vardy has maintained her innocence throughout the scandal and has insisted she never sold stories about Rooney to the press.
