Chip Gaines reveals his fatherhood fails

Fixer Upper star Chip Gaines has admitted that life as a father-of-five isn't all sunshine and roses, and like any parent he's made his fair share of mistakes.

He and wife Joanna share five children together; Drake, 14, Ella Rose, 12, Duke, 10, Emmie Kay, 9, and Crew, 11 months.

With such a big brood Gaines has been able to gradually fine tune his parenting, though he admits he made "every mistake in the book" with his two eldest.

“There’s lots of stories of me leaving kids places I shouldn’t have left them," he told PEOPLE.

"I’ve forgotten birthdays. Afterward you’re like, ‘I’m the worst person.’”

But Gaines feels that these mistakes are always lessons, and mucking up a few times has taught him to be a better dad – or at least to make sure he has all the kids before leaving the park.

Over time he's also become a more confident father, confessing that he was terrified when he and Joanna welcomed their first child 14 years ago.

Like most parents they were "scared to death" and "didn't know what they were doing", but admits that's just part of the process when it comes to raising kids.

In a previous interview Gaines admitted that he's nervous about his kids growing up, especially his eldest, who are heading into their teenage years.

He worries about them driving and dating, but knows that "you've got to let them do their thing".

Calling parenting a "big adventure", he said that raising his children with Joanna has been the "honour" of his life and he's looking forward to many more years with their big brood.

And if the photos Gaines shares of his family on Instagram are anything to go by, things have turned out just fine.
