Bride-to-be criticised for telling stepdaughter, nine, to wear Spanx

A bride-to-be has been criticised for telling her nine-year-old step-daughter to wear spanx to her wedding.

On Facebook, the woman explained she was struggling to find a suitable wedding outfit for the child because "nothing fit".

"She's a thick girl. I have tried 'big girl youth sizes' and nothing fits her," her post reads."I can't really go to her mum because (of) the typical new woman situation."

The woman finally found a garment she liked five days before the wedding, but it didn't fit her stepdaughter.

Stressed by the time frame, she asked commenters whether it would be reasonable make her step-daughter wear shapewear.

"Definitely not a body-shaming post," she began, "but how do y'all feel about a nine-year-old wearing a body shaper (girdle)?."

"She's a plus-size kid. And her dress is a little snug. I figured why not try a body shaper to smooth out some of the edges to give that perfect fit."

The bride-to-be said the dress could not be altered to fit the child and was "only snug in the waist area."

"Everything else fits perfectly. Wedding is five days away," she shared.

The post immediately garnered criticism, resulting in the bride-to-be deleting her original plea.

Many commenters were horrified, reminding the woman her stepdaughter was still a child and her actions could result in "long term" self-esteem damage.

"She's nine. It's never OK to put a child in Spanx - ever. End of story," wrote one user.

"I can't even begin to imagine the long term ramifications that are going to have on that child. I want to cry," shared another.

Some suggested she simply purchase an outfit that fits.
