A newlywed couple have joined Black Lives Matter protesters demonstrating peacefully in the US just moments after saying "I do".

Dr. Kerry Anne Perkins and Michael Gordon had just tied the knot in Philadelphia when demonstrators nearby joined the wedding party in cheering them on.

The couple's nuptials had already been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, so instead of the dream wedding they had planned, Dr Perkins and Gordon opted for a "micro wedding" as soon as restrictions were lifted.

Tying the knot at the local Logan Hotel, the pair were posing in front of the hotel for their wedding photos when Black Lives Matter protesters stumbled upon them.

Demonstrators quickly joined in the wedding celebrations, cheering for the newlyweds — both of whom are black.

Footage of the moment was quickly shared to social media, where it has since gone viral, one video raking in more than 2.4 million views in a matter of hours.

"The power of love on so many levels," wrote Twitter user Rachel E. Lopez, who shared the video.

For their part, Dr Perkins and Gordon were quick to join the group who were so supportive of their love.

Still dressed in a tuxedo and wedding gown, the pair marched with protesters towards City Hall, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

A clip later shared by Luxor Wedding Films on Instagram shows the couple standing with demonstrators in front of a local monument.

Dr Perkins and Gordon are seen holding hands in the video, their fists raised in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Hundreds of social media users have since responded to the clip, wishing the couple "love and happiness" and praising them for getting involved.

Black Lives Matter protests have been ongoing throughout the US since the death of George Floyd while in police custody on 25 May.

Peaceful demonstrations have been seen in all 50 states, with the movement now gaining traction abroad as well.

This week marches were held in the UK and Australia, with protests in Sydney, Brisbane and other capital cities drawing tens of thousands of demonstrators.

The protests are calling for change on the issues of racism, police brutality and — in Australia — indigenous deaths in police custody.
