Is your expensive toilet paper a waste? CHOICE reveals the 'budget' winner for 2026

Toilet paper is an important choice for every Australian household, but our options vary wildly when it comes to quality and price.

It can be tempting to choose the cheapest toilet paper at your local supermarket, but for many of us, we can't let standards fall too low (even if we are indulging in a little panic buying – don't do this, by the way).

This is why we feel very invested in the results of Choice's toilet paper rating results released today.

The consumer group revealed its top toilet paper picks reviewing 42 products from Quilton, Kleenex, Sorbent, as well as supermarket own brands.

These included double and triple length rolls, two and three ply, recycled and bamboo.

Let's not go into too much detail about how each toilet roll was tested. Suffice to say, each was rated in four key areas:

1. Softness (Is it gentle?)
2. Separation (Does it tear off easily?)
3. Strength (Will it rip when you wipe?)
4. Sewer-friendliness (Will it clog your bog?)

And the best toilet paper in the country, according to Choice experts, is... Quilton 4 Ply Softness Gold.

The experts gave this one an overall rating of 78 per cent and a softness score of 90 per cent.

It is currently selling for $5.80 for a six-pack at Coles, which works out to be 97c per roll, and $10.30 for a 12-pack at Woolworths, which is 85c per roll.

In second place is Quilton Shea Butter in Gold 4 Ply, which scored an expert rating of 77 percent and a 90 per cent softness score.

Quilton Shea Butter in Gold 4 Ply is selling for $5.80 for a pack of six at Woolworths, which is 97c per roll, and $29 for a 30-pack at Amazon, which works out to be 97c per roll.

In third place on Choice's ranking is Vevelle Luxury Soft Double Length at Woolworths, which scored an expert rating of 77 per cent and softness score of 80 per cent.

It costs $8 for a pack of eight at Woolworths, which is $1 per roll.

The highest-scoring budget buy was also named, and it is Coles So Soft & Strong 3 Ply Embossed White Double Length with a 78 per cent expert rating.

"To be classified by our experts as a Best Buy, the product must score at least 70 per cent in our performance tests but also cost 30c or less per sheet," Choice explained.

Coles So Soft & Strong 3 Ply costs just $9.50 for a pack of 24 which works out to be 39c per roll.

At my local Coles at Baulkham Hills in Sydney, Coles Simply Toilet Paper had completely sold out, which bodes well for its affordability and popularity among Aussie shoppers.

The second best budget buy according to Choice is Woolworths' Vevelle White Toilet Tissue 1 Ply which scored a 78 per cent expert rating and scored highly when it came to softness.

This is on sale at Woolies for $1.75 per roll.

This was followed by Vevelle White Toilet Tissue 2 Ply which is selling at Woolworths for $6 for a pack of 12 which is 50c per roll.

The average Australian goes through approximately 10kg of toilet paper each year.

Choice included some eco-friendly toilet papers in this year's list, noting that "eco-friendly toilet paper hasn't traditionally had a great reputation for softness or quality".

Choice named Naturale 100% Recycled 3 Ply Softness toilet paper as one of the best eco-friendly toilet papers on the market which is on special this week at Woolworths for $5 for a pack of 12, which is 41c per roll.

This was followed by Yarn'n 100% Recycled Aussie Manufactured Deadly Dunny Paper which scored an expert rating of 74 per cent. It is on sale at Woolworths for $11.90 for a pack of eight, which is $1.48 per roll.
