Aussie stars share their favourite Christmas traditions: 'Not a year goes by without it'

The borders have reopened and lockdown is no more, so this Christmas will be one to celebrate.

As families reunite for festivities, our favourite Australian stars share insights into what Christmas traditions they will be carrying out this year.

"I told my dad about 10 years ago that we should start a Christmas tradition because we don't really have one.

"He had some grapes in his hand and said 'grape-throwing contest', and now not a Christmas goes by without a family grape-throwing comp."

"I grew up in England, so a lot of my Christmas traditions seem strange in Australia. Bread sauce, anyone? Or how about carving little candles out of Brazil nuts? Weird, huh?"

"No unusual habits that I can think of — perhaps I've been conditioned to them!

"Christmas Eve has traditionally been the day we celebrate, and it's always involved lots of people and lots of food. My parents normally host the Christmas Eve party, and there's always mountains of food and lots of Arabic music playing. You knew it was a good night when they'd bring out the Darbuka, a traditional Arabic drum."

"Ever since Darren and I got married in Mexico six years ago, we have a family tradition on Christmas Eve where the immediate family get together and we have a fish taco and margarita night. Dad catches fresh whiting — was Jesus a fisherman or a carpenter? I can't remember. Either way, Dad is the hero for providing the perfect fish for fresh tacos."

"My dad still has the same Christmas tree, which he bought the year older my brother Bo was born, he's now 36. It's a real Christmas tree and is potted in his garden all year round and brings it in every December. It's a little sparse these days and my brother and I laugh about how Dad decorates it every year. It wouldn't feel like Christmas without it."
